The LIUNA Local 829 Volunteer Organizing Committee recently answered a call from the National Park Service to help restore the gardens at the Jean Baptiste Valle House, located in Ste, Genevieve, Mo.
Jean Baptiste Vallé is best known as the last commandant of Ste. Genevieve, a title he and several of his family members held. The commandant was the civil and military leader within Ste. Genevieve and served as a point of contact for the colonial governors and the everyday townspeople. He oversaw Ste. Genevieve’s transition from French to American after receiving the position in 1804. The rose garden was established in 1811, and is free for tourists to walk through on their visits to the town.
